Preventing Connector, Pinout, and Part-Number Errors
Connector errors usually begin when a complete part identity, viewing direction, or circuit map is missing. Put the housing, terminals, seals, locks, mating part, orientation, cavity numbering, wire identification, and from-to connection into one controlled package, then verify it at purchasing, assembly, and first article.

- Use the full manufacturer part number for every housing, contact, seal, lock, and accessory.
- Label each connector view as mating side or wire side and mark pin 1, keying, and orientation.
- Connect the schematic, wiring table, BOM, connector drawing, production fixture, and test program with the same circuit identifiers.
- Check both physical seating and electrical mapping during the first article.

Create one connector identity block
For each connector, list reference designator, manufacturer, complete housing part number, mating part, contact or terminal part number, seal and secondary-lock parts, accessory or backshell, color and keying, cavity count, and the wire range used.
Link every item to the BOM revision. A product-family label or distributor description should not replace the complete identity.
Connector and pinout control table
Use the same connector reference and circuit names in every document.

Control viewing direction
Place an orientation symbol and words such as mating face or wire side beside the cavity view. Add the latch, key, flat, notch, or another unmistakable feature. Do not rely on a generic front view when the cable exits behind it.
Use the same orientation in the test fixture map or state the conversion explicitly.
Cross-check before release
Run a structured comparison before purchasing or loading a test program.
- BOM part number matches the connector drawing and mating interface.
- Terminal and seal match the wire conductor and insulation ranges.
- Wiring table agrees with schematic, connector view, wire marks, and test map.
- Keying, color, cavity plug, lock, label, and cable exit match the installed configuration.
Verify the first article
Inspect part identity, terminal seating, seals, locks, cavity plugs, wire marks, labels, orientation, and cable exit. Run continuity and polarity from the controlled map, and include fit or mating checks when the equipment program defines them.
Record the sample identifier and document revision so a corrected pinout cannot be separated from the evidence used to approve it.
Common error patterns
Watch for shortened part numbers, an unlabeled mirrored connector view, cavity numbering copied from the mating part, pin names that differ between schematic and wiring table, and a test fixture updated without the released drawing.
Treat a connector or pinout correction as an engineering change with inventory and work-in-process disposition, not as an informal shop note.
