Traceability and Lot-Record Planning
Traceability should connect a finished cable assembly or lot to the decisions the equipment program may need later. Define the part and revision, lot or unit level, component and process records, inspection and test evidence, label and package identifiers, shipment link, retention, and retrieval method before production begins.

Begin with the retrieval question
State what someone should be able to learn from an assembly, lot, package, or shipment identifier. Examples include the governing revision, component lot for selected items, inspection or test result, production period, packaging configuration, or affected shipment.
Choose the narrowest useful traceability level. More data is not automatically better when fields are not controlled or retrievable.
Traceability matrix
Mark each field as required, conditional, or not needed for the order.

Choose lot or unit level deliberately
Lot-level records group assemblies made under a defined common condition. Define what starts and ends a lot and how material, revision, setup, time, or order changes affect it. Unit-level records require a unique identifier and a reliable way to link each unit to its result.
Do not print unique labels without establishing how uniqueness, verification, replacement, and record lookup are controlled.
Plan the record flow
Trace the identifier through each required handoff.
- Receiving and kitting for selected components or materials.
- Production traveler or electronic record with part, revision, quantity, and process status.
- Inspection and test records linked to lot, sample, or unit as specified.
- Label and package verification, packing list or shipment link, and delivery of requested records.
Test retrieval before production
Use a sample identifier to retrieve the intended product revision, material or process information, inspection and test evidence, package, and shipment fields. Check access, file naming, data entry, scans, and exception handling.
Include correction rules so a damaged label, entry error, split lot, rework, or retest does not break the link or erase the original record.
Common traceability mistakes
Avoid asking for full traceability without defining the fields and level, combining different revisions under one lot, collecting component data that cannot be linked to the finished assembly, or delivering a certificate with no path to the underlying record.
Keep retention and record-delivery expectations tied to the order and applicable agreement; do not assume one period or format fits every program.
