Annual demand alone is not a supply plan. Cable assembly purchasing and production decisions also need order cadence, forecast horizon, variation, release rules, component constraints, revision stability, inventory custody, delivery destination, and a clear method for reviewing safety-stock assumptions.

Describe demand by configuration and period

Split demand by part number, drawing revision, option, target market, or packaging configuration when those differences change the BOM or build. Show the forecast horizon and the portion that is firm, planned, or uncertain.

Identify service or replacement demand separately from production demand. It may continue after the main equipment build changes revision.

Separate forecast from commitment

A forecast helps plan material and work, but it is not automatically a purchase commitment. Record which periods and quantities can authorize component purchases, production, or reserved inventory and which remain planning information.

Where long-lead or minimum-purchase components need earlier action, identify the commercial decision and unused-material responsibility explicitly.

Build safety-stock inputs

Use the factors to construct scenarios; this guide does not prescribe one formula or universal stock level.

  • Replenishment time and variability for the complete usable component set.
  • Demand variation, release behavior, required response, and consequence of a shortage.
  • Revision, obsolescence, shelf, storage, allocation, and unused-material exposure.
  • Inventory location, responsible party, visibility, packaging, lot or revision traceability, and replenishment trigger.

Connect cadence to manufacturing and delivery

Order cadence can change setup frequency, batch size, inspection and record preparation, packaging, freight consolidation, storage, and the time available to resolve a component issue. Compare scenarios using the same total period demand.

Name the destination and delivery term because transit, handoffs, and import preparation may change the practical replenishment cycle.

Common planning mistakes

Avoid treating annual demand as one firm order, setting safety stock without revision or obsolescence exposure, combining all configurations into one quantity, or using a supplier lead-time statement without a date and component scope.

A planning model is useful only while its assumptions remain current. Assign an owner and review cadence for each high-impact input.

Who should hold safety stock?

The responsible party, location, replenishment trigger, allowable use, aging or revision exposure, and commercial treatment should be agreed for the specific program. Do not assume inventory held anywhere is available to every order.
